Note: There’s a term used in this song ‘Kesariya Baalam’ which literally translates to
‘Saffron coloured beloved/husband’. The word Kesariya is derived from the Hindi word
‘Kesar’ which means ‘Saffron’. Saffron is the colour of the turban worn by Rajasthani men
on whom this song is based. Hence the singer, who is the wife/beloved is calling out to
her husband/beloved as ‘Kesariya Baalma’ which means ‘O beloved with/wearing a saffron
turban’. There is also a mention of Ghoomar in this song. Ghoomar is a traditional folk
dance of Rajasthan, a state in India. Ghoomar was developed by the Bhil tribe and was then
adopted by other Rajasthani communities. It is performed by women in swirling robes, and
accompanied by men and women singing together.
